The magical flight attendant’s red lipstick

Diana Vreeland, a legend in the fashion industry, about her favourite colour: “Red is the great clarifier, bright and revealing. I can’t imagine becoming bored with red, it would be like becoming bored with the person you love.”

The lipstick is very important for a flight attendant. The grooming standards have to be strictly respected no matter which company you represent. The same is for the makeup. It is mandatory to wear a perfect, natural make-up. No matter how much you enjoy or not wearing it, how tiring can be to always look impeccable, the beautiful uniform comes with a set of rules that have to be respected. Respecting the companies’ guidelines when applying makeup doesn’t mean you can’t add a personal touch to the look. On the contrary, it is great to put your mark on, but be sure you don’t take it too far in order to break the company’s boundaries.

Our trainer Roxana, who worked for two years as cabin crew for Gulf Air, tells us about her favourite products during her stay in the Middle East.

“Red lipstick was for me one of the grooming standards of the company, therefore a “must” in my daily look. I have to admit that I wasn’t a red lipstick fan at all. Because I had to respect this, I did detailed research about the lipsticks on the market and the shades available. I found two lipsticks that matched my skin colour perfectly.

For the day long-haul flights, I wore BOSS MATTE LIP KIT by Kylie and for the short-haul or night flights I wore DIVA MATTE by MAC.

These are two shades totally different from another. The last one it’s cherry shade, a dark, nocturnal, mysterious red. When I used to wear it I was feeling shrouded in mystery. On the other hand, the first shade is a lively, light red. I loved applying in my early morning flights. This shade energizes you and prepares you psychically for a long flight.

Although the red colour is really hard to apply and to make it look perfect, most of the times it stood by me, encouraging me as a good friend.”

Because at our courses we like to respect all the grooming rules of flight attendants, we asked our colleagues about their favourite red lipsticks.

I’ll start by presenting my personal favourite, Stunna Lip Paint by Fenty Beauty, shade “Uncensored”. I just love the way it looks on my lips while wearing it! I can apply it early in the morning and take it off in the evening without seeing differences. The best thing about it is that it doesn’t dry on your lips as others do. Of course, if you want to reapply it for a more professional look, I totally advise you as it doesn’t look bad on the lips after doing it.

Our trainer Rucsandra, who flew for 30 years for TAROM, the National Carrier of Romania, says that her favourites are Red Woo and Russian Red by Mac.

“Besides my favourites, I also use Lip Stain Always Red by Sephora, which I apply it only after a lip balm because it’s really matte and can dry on the lips. Although it’s that strong and gives you a dryness aspect, I totally recommend it because it’s perfect for long-haul flights.”

Our international trainer, Anca, loves natural looks so she mostly wears lip balms.

“I admit that I’m a person who knows very little about make-up, therefore my skincare and make-up routine is very, very short: moisturizer, SPF, foundation, powder and blush.  2 years ago I stopped using any other make-up product (mascara, eyes shadow, eyeliner etc.) and for the lips I only have two favourites:

Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur – Cherry Bomb by Terry – I love this because it’s extremely light, it’s a good moisturizing for the lips and has a discrete red shade which I love.

Outrageous Plump Effect by Sephora is a gloss which become my best friend since 2017.”
